school's out for summer

My time as Official Jewelry Edjamacator of Diminutive Persons has come to an end.

With the exception of one incident involving a particularly recalcitrant saw blade, no human flesh was maimed in the warping of young minds. Various bits of metal, however, did not escape unscathed.

Young Toni and I managed to cut, file, drill, torch and lathe our way through four complete projects, including a rather complicated forged crown:

The crown was actually challenge number two, and possibly the most complicated task Toni faced. Now known around the studio as the "6 x 6 = 666 Challenge", this devilish bit of metalworking involves creating something from a single sheet of metal. You are allowed to cut, file, drill and fold the six inch square as you wish, but you cannot not remove anything.

Try it with a piece of paper, it can be maddening.

Toni succeeded with flying colors, and sent me the above photo as her victory dance. When I asked about the bowing pose, she told me that she was "Walking like an Egyptian".

I try not to dwell on the fact that she was born sometime after The Bangles hit their stride.
