legends of noh
Characters in the Japanese theater tradition of Noh are as much archetypes as individuals. Each one of their classic visages represents a simplified character, and is used to tell a variety of stories centering on a common theme.
The bestial demon, Hannya, and the beautiful young woman are actually one and the same. In the classic tales, she is transformed by her negative emotions into a vengeful demon.
The kanji on the left, Setsunashugi, refers to a meditation on the dangerous principle of living only for the moment.
